News Home Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - On Aug. 8, Governor Mike Dunleavy issued a disaster declaration for the 2023 City and Borough of Juneau Glacier Outburst Flooding. The disaster declaration activates the State of Alaska Public Assistance, Individual Assistance, and Temporary Housing programs. On Aug. 6, 2023, record flooding occurred from Mendenhall Glacier's Suicide Basin glacial dam outburst along Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River. Initial reports are flooding and riverbank destruction on four different residential streets, disaster damage condemnation of free-standing residential structures and multi-story condominiums, water up to five feet around some residences, and inundation of three sewage lift stations.
